The Cabinet has approved a new scholarship initiative aimed at supporting top-performing students who have excelled in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination to pursue their first degree at globally recognized universities.
As part of the 2025 budget proposal, Rs. 200 million has been allocated to implement this program, aligned with the government’s policy vision of cultivating a “Civilized Citizen – Advanced Human Resource.” The scholarships will fund undergraduate studies lasting up to four years at foreign universities ranked within the top 500 internationally, with instruction in English.
The initiative aims to award scholarships to 200 students over five years, starting with the selection of 20 to 50 students in 2025. Candidates with the highest z-scores in major subject streams will be eligible to apply. Final selection will be carried out by an expert panel comprising university professors and lecturers.
The proposal, presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya, has received Cabinet approval.
